I first met Esther when she was helping raise funds with Kelly Porter (from S1E3) for Love Without Lines---an organization which helps asylum seekers on the US/Mexico border. Esther is a passionate and empathetic person who seeks to better herself, her community and the world we live in. In this episode Esther and I talk about the ins and outs of Human Trafficking right here in our backyard of Columbus, Ohio, how drug trafficking is incorporated, who is behind all of this, and what Esther does to better victims, survivors and the Columbus community affected by all of this trafficking. (If you haven't already, give this Episode a listen here).
Human and Drug Trafficking- Human Trafficking takes the "Act" and "Means" and puts them together to force sex labor onto its victims. Drug Trafficking or distribution is the act of selling, transporting or importing illegal drugs. The difference between the two types of trafficking is that drugs can be sold only once before consumed, but a trafficked human can be sold multiple times for years--and in some cases lifetimes--at a time.
Difference Between Sex Work and Sex Trafficking- As told by StopTheTraffick.org "When a person willingly takes part in the sale of sex, it is consensual and doesn't affect their human rights. This is called Sex Work.
When a person takes part in the sale of sex through threat, abduction or other means of coercion this is called Sex Trafficking."
Donna Dalton- Donna Dalton was a mother who supported herself and her family by doing sex work. However, on Aug. 23rd 2018, she was in an unmarked car with vice cop Andrew Mitchell who had driven her to a common spot where "johns" would do their "business"--the wall her parked next to made it impossible for Donna to escape--and this is where he shot her to death 8 times. This sparked her family, friends, and the activist community to come together in the fight for justice. Although Donna's murderer Andrew Mitchell is being held in a federal prison in Northeast Ohio, his trail has been pushed to March. To read more on the crimes Andrew Mitchell has committed click here or to read more on what happened to Donna Dalton click here. As well Esther did a story here.
Camping In The Hood Is Good- A Program through1DivineLine2Health to show kids that there are people looking out for them in the West Side. They are chaperoned and have a fun stay in the 1DL2H Butterfly Garden. To volunteer, reach out to Esther!
Companies & Orgs That Help Survivors Of Human Trafficking:
1DivineLine2Health- the organization that Esther is apart of. This organization "provides Christ-centered care to the sick who have no access to healthcare via a line of compassionate messengers who deliver healing to victims of human & drug trafficking and injustices locally and globally." They put on many fund raisers and are open to volunteers and donations--so go check them out!
Freedom A La Cart- "At Freedom a la Cart, we bring hope to survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation so they can build new lives of freedom and become self-sufficient. We believe that giving a woman practical job skills and developing strong work ethic is vital for creating a pathway to freedom. So, we’ve created a safe place of restoration where survivors can heal, learn and grow as they prepare for sustainable employment and reintegrate into our community."
