What is happening in Poland?
On Oct. 22, 2020 Poland decided that terminating pregnancies for fetal abnormalities — one of three justifications for legal abortions and virtually the only type performed in the country — violated the Constitution...thus making an almost all out ban of abortions in Poland. Since then, there have been delays of the ban due to weeks of protests by Polish womb warriors and allies, but unfortunately their efforts were confronted with nationalist groups and police who violently clashed with protesters...and as of Nov 27, 2020, abortion is banned in Poland, except in the following circumstances: when the woman's life or health is endangered by the continuation of pregnancy, when the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act, when there is a high probability of a severe and irreversible fetal impairment.
Who does this impact?
People with wombs will have a very hard time getting a legal abortion...which means back ally abortions will more than likely happen, and/or abortions abroad will become the new normal. The medical personnel ordering and carrying out the abortion are subject to criminal penalties including imprisonment. Consent of a physician is required for circumstance above, while abortions in view of circumstance above must be certified by a prosecutor. Parental consent is always required if the person seeking an abortion is a minor. In addition, persuading someone to carry out an illegal termination of their pregnancy is a criminal act.
What does the United States have to do with abortions? As Aleksandra talks about in this episode, Trumpism is as rampant as the pandemic...making far-right rhetoric openly accepted and conservative laws popping up all around the world. As rest of the world watches the increase in laws restricting abortions to earlier and earlier stages of pregnancy and stricter guidelines and harsher punishments becoming the norm in the United States, they lean towards adapting their own laws and norms surrounding abortions. States like Georgia, Ohio, and Alabama have created bills making abortions all but illegal in most cases after 6 weeks...In the episode, we talk about influential American alt-right conservative Christian/Catholic groups and people who have lobbied for these bans both in the United States and in other countries--including Poland.
